We’re going to make a neat roll of math paper, so join us and grab your supplies.

How to do an addition and subtraction activity

What you need:

  • 5 sheets of colored paper
  • ruler
  • toilet paper
  • pencil
  • black marker
  • drag
  • glue

Step-by-step instructions

Divide the toilet paper roll into 5 equal parts. You can use a ruler to make this process easier.

As you can see in the example, the ruler helps keep everything super straight.

Cut out five different colored strips from colored paper of the same size as the strips.

You can use any color you want; These are just the colors used in this project.

We like orange.

But we also like blue.

And yellow.

Measure the strips so that there is a small section to glue them together.

Write the numbers 1 to 10 on three strips.

Write the “plus and minus” signs.

Measure your next strip.

And repeat writing the numbers.

Write an “equals” sign in the next box.

And rewrite the numbers 1-10 in the last strip.

Be careful not to glue them to the roll – just tape the strips so they can slide around the roll.

Stick them on the roll in the following order: number, plus/minus sign, number, equal sign, and number.

You will be able to move the columns around as you try to solve different problems.

You can solve math problems with your child or allow them to work independently.

Either way, this is a game changer in teaching and learning.

Don’t be afraid to allow your child to take time to figure out these problems.

Color makes the learning process more interesting.

Which part of this project was your favorite part?

Have fun learning math!
