How to Draw a Mermaid – Step by Step Drawing Tutorial

Today we will show you how to draw a mermaid step by step! Your kids will love this tutorial because it really makes drawing a mermaid easy. Just follow the simple steps and you will be done in no time.

You can also customize this hairstyle, there are so many possibilities when it comes to hairstyles – we gave the mermaid long straight hair but any hairstyle will do. Your child can have long, short, curly, wavy hair… Whatever they like. Or they can draw a mermaid that looks exactly like them! They can swap out a few details and create a mermaid just as easily.

How to draw a mermaid step by step

What you need:

Step 1

The first step in our mermaid drawing tutorial is to draw the face. Start by making a wide U shape.

Step 2

Add in the details. Draw the eyes. Start with the outer circles and add in the details. Draw the eyelashes and eyebrows. Add a simple mouth.

Next draw two straight lines for the neck.

Step 3

Next is the base of the shell and the waist.

Step 4

Draw two curves to connect the shell and the waist.

Also start drawing the left side of the mermaid’s tail. Make it look like an S shape.

Step 5

Finish the tail.

Step 6

Next up are the shoulders and tail fins. Everything is going pretty well right?

Step 7

Next comes the first part of the hairstyle.

And the arms. Keep it simple, no extra detail when it comes to the hands. Hands are one of the hardest things to draw in general so keep it as simple as possible. It will still look great.

Step 8

Hair! We do long and straight hair but you or your child can draw any hairstyle they like!

Step 9

Finishing! Add details to the shell, draw the belly button, and texture the tail and fins.

Step 10

Done. Now you know how to draw a mermaid. The only thing left is to color your mermaid. Let your imagination run wild.
