This is a great project to do with your kids as it makes for a great display. There are many skill areas that it covers and if kids can do it from start to finish they will be extremely proud of their work.

You can also use this opportunity to teach your child how to draw a star. If you are doing this project with younger children, you may need to help them draw or cut out the star.

Tip for working with young children: Although it is more economical to make the moon and star on the same paper plate, young children may find it easier to make the star from a separate sheet of paper.

How to make moon paper plate crafts for kids

What you need

  • 1 large paper plate
  • black marker
  • painted light blue or gray
  • yellow paint
  • drag
  • hole punching machine
  • wool

Step by step instructions

Get all your supplies ready. You can start drawing directly on the paper plate with a marker or sketch it out in pencil first.

Draw a crescent shape with a convex part (for the nose) on the paper plate.

The crescent will be the moon, draw a star on the other side of the paper plate.

Paint the moon. We used light blue paint, gray would look nice too.

While we’re coloring the entire moon blue, you can also draw and color a hat on your moon. It would look pretty cool.

Also, paint the star yellow.

Wait for the paint to dry. Once the paint is completely dry, draw an “outline” with a black marker.

Also draw eyes and mouth.

Cut out stars and moons.

At this point you can also color the other side of the moon and star if you want.

Punch a hole in the upper right side of the moon.

Also, punch a hole in the star.

Thread the yarn through the hole in the star (and tie tightly).

Next thread the yarn through the hole in the moon (hanging star).

Tie a knot and cut off the excess thread.

Looks cute right?

Punch a hole at the top of the moon and tie a piece of yarn to hang it.

Display :).
