Twig Boat Craft

Next time you go for a walk in nature, gather some twigs, because today we are going to present a fun tutorial on how to make a cute twig boat.

I really enjoy recycled and natural crafts, they are not only fun to make but also spark a lot of creativity.

The thing is… As a kid, I was obsessed with nature crafts, especially twig crafts… I used to spend days outside building my twig city, making the walls exactly like this little boat, covering the roof with woven (dried) leaves and grass.

Some of the houses even had windows and doors. The roads were paved with gravel and I even built a few bridges. I was fascinated and had great fun.

Boats Made from Tree Branches – Fun Nature Crafts to Make with Your Kids

What you need

  • twigs and branches, the more the merrier because not all will fit
  • wool
  • glue gun
  • paper for sails

Start by selecting some more or less straight branches. Cut them to even lengths. We used 10 branches, use whatever number makes your boat look good.

Take a branch and tie a piece of yarn to one end. Tie another piece of yarn to the other end.

Now take another branch and wrap the yarn around both branches – making a figure 8 – around the first branch, make a loop around the second branch, around the first branch again and the second branch.

Do the same on the other side.

This is what your boat should look like when you have woven it through all the slats. If there is any excess yarn sticking out, leave it there, you will need it (but don’t worry if it doesn’t, you can always tie on new string).

Now it’s time to reinforce the boat with two new branches. “Sew” them to the boat along the yarn.

Heat up the glue gun. Place a branch in the center of the boat and apply a generous amount of hot glue.

Once the glue is dry, glue the sail you cut out of paper (or leaves).
