Ball Games for 1-2 Year Olds

Got a ball or two? Let’s play! Ball games for 1-2 year olds are great because they’re great for motor skills and enhancing hand-eye coordination (plus they’re super fun). Softballs and beach balls are the best options because they are light and soft.

1. “Basketball – not in the traditional sense! Get a ball and a bucket, a box or a basin large enough that a ball can easily fit inside. Show your 1 year old what to do with the ball – throw it in the bucket. Give the ball to your child and place it in the bucket right next to them, just far enough away that they can’t just put the ball inside but just throw it a little. Now let him or her throw the ball into the bucket. The first few “throws” may fail, but after a few tries, they will understand and have a smile on their face when they “nail it” which is so precious. We played this game with an 11 month old!

2. “Roll the ball” – this is an easy game that a 1 year old can master in just a few seconds. You and your child sit facing each other and pass the ball to each other (use your feet or other objects as barriers so the ball doesn’t get lost).

3. “Soccer” – once children master the art of walking, it won’t take them long to master the art of kicking a ball (and oh how fun it is!). However, be prepared for a few kicks and misses (or falls).

4. “Toss the ball” – beach balls (or even balloons) are the way to go. Toddlers love to throw things (as you know) so they will enjoy this activity.
