With spring approaching, we’ve been busy making all sorts of insect crafts at Easy Peasy and Fun and it’s time for us to make a butterfly craft (since we’ve been busy making caterpillars and all sorts of ladybugs).

We’ll start our “butterfly craft” with this beautiful 3D butterfly pop-up card idea, a cute little butterfly flapping its wings – complete with a printable template and easy-to-follow instructions.

You can simply print out one of our templates, one has all the markings ready and you just need to colour them in. The other template allows for a little more creativity as it just has the outline of the wings and kids can draw and decorate them however they see fit.

No matter which template your child uses, we know the end result will be stunning. And sparkly if you decide to use glitter glue to decorate.

Or follow this step-by-step folding guide

Are you ready to make this flying butterfly? Let’s get started!

Print the template – there are two pages for one butterfly.

Color or design your butterfly.

We used a regular marker (Tombow) and added some glitter accents to the wings with glitter glue.

Once the butterfly wings are colored (and dry if you used glitter glue), it’s time to cut, cut, cut.

Cut along the outline, around the square and butterfly.

You will see a line along the body of the butterfly in both patterns.

Cut along that line.

Now it’s time to fold.

Press the butterfly down, the fold is between the butterfly and the square. Make the fold.

Repeat with the remaining wing.

Now it’s time to put the butterfly together.

Assemble the butterfly by pushing one butterfly wing through the other (through the part you cut along the lines).

The two halves should fit together, forming a butterfly shape – if they are slightly off, you can cut along the dashed line a little further (if necessary).

Fold a letter-sized piece of paper in half. Crease. Unfold.

“Close” the butterfly card – glue the butterfly inside and apply glue to one side of the card.

Glue one half of the cardboard, about 1/8 inch from the center.

Glue the other side of the butterfly card to the other half of the cardstock.

Now you will see a cute little card with a butterfly flapping its wings appear.

Done!

Just let the glue dry completely before patting.
