Surprise Paper Flowers for Mother's Day

How about making a gift for your mom and letting her know that you love her deeply and sincerely?

How to make paper flowers for Mother’s Day

What you need:

  • light red cardboard
  • red paper
  • green paper
  • brown cardboard
  • glue
  • drag
  • hot glue (+hot glue gun)
  • pencil
  • compass bow
  • round hole punching machine
  • photo of you smiling or being silly (you can also make this flower without the picture inside if you want, but the picture is what makes this peony a surprise peony)
  • black pencil
  • Straw

Materials used

Step by step guide

Flower

Take a compass and draw three circles on the light red cardboard.

The diameters of the circles should be 8.6 cm, 7.6 cm and 5.6 cm.

Step 1

Cut out the circles.

Step 2

Photo

Take a photo and punch in your smiley or silly face. The diameter of the hole punch should be 3.8 cm.

If you don’t have a circle hole punch this size, use a compass to create a circle on the photo, then cut that circle out.

If you don’t want to use a photo, punch out a light red circle instead. But to turn this peony into a surprise peony, you’ll need a photo.

Step 4

The petals

Punch out twenty-five red circles. Again, if you don’t have a circle hole punch this size, make the circles with a compass, then cut them out.

Step 5

Fold the circles as shown. Make sure you do not fold them in half but rather fold them less.

Step 6

Apply a little glue to the smaller (folded) parts of the circles. Take the largest light red circle and start gluing these red circles to it.

Step 8

You should glue eight small red circles to the largest light red circle as shown.

Step 9

Press the circles inwards to get a closed flower as shown in the picture.

Step 10

Repeat this step with the remaining two light red circles. Attach seven red circles to the larger light red circle, then attach six circles to the smaller light red circle.

Then close them. Now we are left with four red circles on the table.

Step 11

Glue these four red circles around the photo circle (or glue them around the light red circle if you decide not to use a photo).

Step 12

Here are the four flower parts we have created so far.

Step 13

Continue gluing them together. That’s how you form the flower.

Step 15

Beautiful, right? Now close the flower and set it aside.

Step 16

Trunk

Take the green paper and cut it into four long strips about 1 cm wide.

Step 17

Apply a small amount of glue to the first strip.

Step 18

Start wrapping this strip of tape around the straw.

Step 19

When you finish the first strip, continue with the second strip.

Step 20

We have prepared the trunk.

Step 21

Take the remaining two green strips and wrap them around the ends of the stem.

Step 22

Done! Now let’s move on to the leaves.

Step 23

The leaves

On green paper, draw some peony leaves. Make two branches with three leaves on each branch.

Step 24

Use scissors to cut off the leaves.

Step 25

Now take a leafy branch and draw it twice more on the green paper.

Step 26

Draw smaller leaves inside larger leaves.

Step 27

Cut off branches with small leaves.

Step 28

Now let’s see. You will have two larger branches with leaves and two smaller branches.

Step 29

Glue small branches with leaves on top of larger branches.

Step 30

Pedestal

Use a circle punch to punch a circle into the brown cardboard.

If you don’t have a 1.5 inch hole punch, use a circular compass to form a circle and cut it out.

Step 31

These are all the parts we need to start assembling the flower now.

Step 32

First, we use hot glue to stick the flower stem to the back of the flower.

Step 33

After the glue dries, we continue to glue the branches with leaves on the tree trunk.

Step 34

Then we apply some glue to the bottom of the stem and attach it to the brown circle. Done!

Step 35

Now open the flower and write a short message inside like “I love you mom” or “You are the best mom” or “Thank you for everything mom”.

This step is optional.

You don’t have to write anything inside the flower if you don’t want to.

Step 36

The last thing to do is close the petals.

Step 37

Your Mother’s Day paper flower is done!
