  • brown cover
  • glue
  • drag
  • hot glue (+ hot glue gun)
  • pencil
  • compass arc
  • round awl
  • a photo of you smiling or being silly (you can also make this flower without the image inside if you want, but it’s the image that makes this peony an unexpected peony)
  • black lining
  • Straw

Materials used

Instructions step by step

Take an arc compass and draw three circles on light red cardstock.

The diameter of the circles should be 8.6 cm, 7.6 cm and 5.6 cm.

Step 1

Cut out the circles.

Step 2

Take a photo and punch your smiling or silly face. The diameter of the circular punch should be 3.8 cm.

If you don’t have a circle punch this size, go ahead and create a circle on the photo using a bow compass, then cut the circle out.

If you don’t want to use a photo, punch out a light red circle instead. But to turn this peony into an unexpected peony requires an image.

Step 4

Punch 25 red circles. Again, if you don’t have a circle punch of this size, make the rings using a bow compass, then cut them out.

Step 5

Fold the circles as shown in the picture. Make sure you don’t fold them in half but less.

Step 6

Apply a little glue to the smaller (folded) parts of the circle. Take the biggest light red circle and start attaching these red circles to it.

Step 8

You should paste eight small red circles into the largest light red circle as shown.

Step 9

Press the circles inwards so you get a closed flower as shown in the picture.

Step 10

Repeat this step with the remaining two light red circles. Attach the seven red circles to the larger sized light red circle and then attach the six circles to the smaller light red circle.

Close them afterwards. Now we have four red circles left on the table.

Step 11

Glue these four red circles around the photo circle (or glue them around the light red circle if you decide not to use a photo).

Step 12

Here are the four flower parts we have crafted so far.

Step 13

Go ahead and glue them inside the other. That’s how you shape the flower.

Step 15

Beautiful, isn’t it? Now close the flower and set it aside.

Step 16

Take green paper and cut out four long strips about 1 cm wide.

Step 17

Apply some glue to the first strip.

Step 18

Begin wrapping the strip around the straw.

Step 19

Once you finish the first strip, continue with the second strip.

Step 20

We have prepared the trunk.

Step 21

Take the remaining two green strips and wrap them around the top of the stem.

Step 22

Complete! Now we turn to the leaves.

Step 23

The leaves

On green paper, draw a few peony leaves. Make two branches with three leaves on each branch.

Step 24

Cut leaves with scissors.

Step 25

Now take a branch with leaves and draw two more times on the green paper.

Step 26

Draw smaller leaves inside larger leaves.

Step 27

Cut off branches with smaller leaves.

Step 28

Let’s see now. You should have two larger branches with leaves and two smaller branches.

Step 29

Glue small branches with leaves on top of larger branches.

Step 30

Take a circle hole punch and punch a circle on brown cardstock.

If you don’t have a 3.8 cm diameter circle hole punch, take a bow compass, form a circle and cut it out.

Step 31

These are all the parts we need to start assembling the flower now.

Step 32

First, we glue the stem on the back of the flower with hot glue.

Step 33

After the glue hardens, we continue to glue the branches with leaves on the trunk.

Step 34

Then we apply some glue to the bottom part of the stem and attach it to the brown circle. Complete!

Step 35

Now open the flower and write a short message inside like “Love you mom” or “Mom, you are the best” or “Thank you for everything.”

This step is optional.

You don’t have to write anything inside the flower if you don’t want to.

Step 36

The last thing to do is close the flower.

Step 37

Your Mother’s Day confetti is complete!
