These DIY chalk paint ornaments are a great project for the whole family. Kids and adults alike will love making them, and since they look so chic, they’ll look great on your Christmas tree.
Not only are they great decorations, but they can also be great gifts for kids.

I spend a lot of time wandering the aisles of craft stores thinking of fun ways to use simple craft supplies.
One of my favorites is these little wood chip packs. They are so open and can be used in so many creative ways by kids.
This time we turned them into cute chalkboard ornaments for the tree but also a great gift to give, either on their own or tied to a gift wrap.
DIY Chalk Paint Decorations
What you need:
- wood slice
- blackboard paint
- white chalk marker/paint pen
- ribbon or rope
- foam brush
- hot glue gun/glue
Step by step instructions
If your wood is rough, use a piece of sandpaper or a sanding block to smooth it out.
Paint one side near the edge of the bark with chalkboard paint and let dry.
Repeat with a second coat and allow to dry completely.
Here are a few ways your child can create their own chalkboard decorations.
You can let them draw a picture on it with chalk, it will last forever, like the family photo my daughter drew below, what a sweet keepsake we will have!
You can leave it black and have some chalk on hand so your child can draw over and over again, or you can mix it up and draw something like a tic tac toe board with permanent paint/chalk markers and then use regular chalk to play the game.
Finally turn the wood over and hot glue a loop of ribbon to the back to create a hanger, making sure it is attached right side up so your ornament image hangs properly.
Happy crafting!
