Making Mother’s Day cards can be a fun activity for the classroom or at home and this awesome DIY heart notebook will make it even more fun. Needless to say, this great craft project also doubles as a DIY Mother’s Day gift!
Of course, this project isn’t just limited to Mother’s Day, any family member (or friend) would love this kid-made card/gift. When I was a kid, my sister and I made this card for my grandpa on his birthday (and then everyone in the family got their own version).
It was a very fun activity and I still remember how we painted and how my mom helped me assemble it (since I was a preschooler at the time).
I am so proud of every picture (maybe only I understand) that I have drawn and really love this heart shaped book.
I know your kids will love doing this little project, it’s pretty easy to do although younger kids will need some help folding the pages. But once they fold the first page, the rest will be a piece of cake.
Ready to do it yourself? Follow our guide!
What you need
Optional: yellow paper (or any other color), biodegradable glitter, stickers, sequins…
Print out the heart template. There are multiple hearts on the printable, you only need one (you may want to have more if you are considering using it for a classroom craft as each child will need their own template).
You can also create or draw your own pattern but it is important that the heart is symmetrical.
Cut out the pattern.
Fold a sheet of printer paper in half.
Fold it in half again.
Place the heart template in the corner (the bottom of the heart is in the corner and there is no opening).
Draw a heart shape with a pencil. Cut out the heart – cut along the top part of the heart (the dome) only.
Open it up (you will have a “4 leaf clover” shape).
Draw something pretty or write a cute little message.
Fold it in half as shown below.
*One heart on top, two hearts doubled*.
Repeat with as many sheets of paper as you want – each sheet is a page of the book (technically 2 pages).
Take one of the drawings. Open it.
This is the tricky part and I highly recommend you watch the video tutorial on this part.
What you need to do is push the “side heart”, that is the heart that you folded in half in the previous step, inside.
When finished, you will have a beautiful heart shape.
Repeat with all other pages.
Apply glue to one side of the heart.
Click another heart on the first heart.
Apply glue to the next heart shape.
Stick the third piece on top.
Continue until all hearts are gone.
Take the heart shape again and draw it twice on the red cardboard.
Cut it out.
Apply glue to the white heart shape (over the entire surface)
Place a ribbon (or yarn) in the center of the heart (don’t cut the ribbon yet).
Place the red heart on top.
Flip over, add glue, ribbon and another heart.
Cut the ribbon (leaving enough length to tie into a bow).
You can keep the heart shape as is or add a smaller heart inside using a different color.
You can add a message to your DIY heart shaped notebook cover.
Tie a ribbon and you’re done!
Your homemade heart ribbon is ready to give to someone special.
