DIY Paper Plate Christmas Tree

How to make your own Christmas tree using paper plates

What you need:

paper plate
painted green
paint brush

pencil
paper or foam for the star

pom-poms (different colors)

Step-by-step instructions

Paper plate tree

Take a paper plate and let your child color it with green paint. Tempera paint and acrylic paint work well. Be sure to use a non-toxic variety (check the label on the bottle) if you make this Christmas paper plate craft for toddlers or preschoolers.

Older children can cut the paper plate into 3 pieces themselves (you can also talk about fractions at this point), while for younger children you may have to cut this for them.

Star

Have children draw star shapes with paper or foam. If you work with young children, you can use a star-shaped paper punch, which your children will enjoy.

Glue the star to the top of the tree.

Trunk

A Christmas tree needs a trunk, so have your child cut a rectangle from brown cardstock, then glue it to the back of the tree.

The tree will look extremely festive with lots of colorful pom-poms. They’re easy for little hands to grip (and great for fine motor skills, too).

Alternatively, you can also use regular paper and let children punch out different shapes with paper punches or let them crumple the paper into balls.
