Don’t throw away your egg cartons, instead you and your kids can make this adorable egg carton turtle craft. This is an easy and fun way to recycle old egg cartons and give them new life. It’s a perfect little summer craft for kids to do at home or at summer camp, but since turtles and tortoises are always popular, it’s fun to make year-round.
What’s also great about this product is that even though we’ll show you how to make a green turtle, this turtle craft looks good in any color. Your child can make a turtle rainbow.

Warm summer days call for all kinds of summer crafts, especially those themed with ocean animals like turtles.
This special egg carton craft for kids is great for all ages (and recyclable!), you just need to prepare the egg cartons (cut them out first) if you make the project Do this in preschool or kindergarten because some egg cartons can be difficult to cut.
How to make turtle crafts using egg cartons
What you need:
- pencil
- drag
- glue
- egg carton
- paint (we used light blue and dark blue)
- black marker
- white paper (or use googly eyes)
- green paper
Step-by-step instructions
Body
Have your child use an egg carton and draw a line around the two embossed parts.
As mentioned earlier, if you are working with preschoolers or children in kindergarten it is best to do this first (even more so if this is a classroom craft or a summer camp).
Cut out the piece (it should be shaped like a number eight).
We used acrylic paint, but you could use watercolor or even liquid watercolor to paint the egg carton.
Tip: if you’re working with young children, use washable paint.
You will need two colors to draw the turtle. No matter what color your child chooses, this craft will be cutest if using a lighter color for the head and a darker color for the shell.
To make the turtle’s shell look more realistic, have your child use a black marker and draw lines on it.
Feet
Cut four leg shapes out of green (or other colored) paper.
Your child can cut each sheet of paper individually, or if they’re more dexterous, place the sheets on top of one another and cut all four at once.
Have your child use glue to stick the turtle’s feet together.
Eyes
Ask the children to cut two circles from white paper, then use a black pen to draw eyes and glue them onto the turtle’s head.
They can also use googly eye or googly eye paste.
The mouth
All this turtle needs is a pretty smile. Have your child use the black pen again to draw it.
The craft of making turtles from egg cartons is completed!
If your child wants, they can also add a small tail at the back but this requires a little more fine motor skills.
We love how it turned out!
