Fairies are magical creatures and you can easily capture some of that magic by creating your own fairy garden. This garden can be made from materials you collect on a nature walk or you can buy them from your nearest craft store (or similar).

We should warn you that making fairy stone houses is extremely addictive and you may have a hard time stopping after making your first one. But they can fit almost anywhere so the more you make them, the more the magic will spread.

Are you ready to make your own miniature fairy garden? Let’s do it!

What you need:

  • a large flat rock (any shape is fine, but a flat circle is great) – we bought it near the river, but arts and crafts stores usually sell them too (or gardening stores)
  • acrylic paint, white, black, brown, red
  • paint brushes
  • pencil with eraser (optional)
  • Decorative sand or small rocks – again these are available at affordable prices in craft stores, nature is your friend too
  • moss (store bought or from nature)
  • glass bottle

Fairy Garden

Step by step instructions

If you get your stone from nature, wash it and let it dry completely.

Paint with white paint. Depending on the pigment of the paint, you may need to apply several coats. You can also leave the stone its natural color. Allow the paint to dry.

Once the paint is dry, paint the top of the rock red.

While waiting for the red paint to dry, paint the door – a brown door with a black frame.

Also, draw a small window.

Tip: If you find it difficult to paint windows or doors with a paintbrush, you can also draw them with a marker.

Paint or draw a black line under the red roof.

We are making our fairy house into a mushroom, so the white spots are necessary. You can paint them with a brush, or you can dip the eraser from a pencil into the white paint and stamp the dots onto the rock.

Allow the paint to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Find a beautiful glass jar that fits your rock and still has enough space to decorate your fairy garden.

Add some sand or rocks to the jar.

Push rocks into jar. Add sand or rocks if needed.

Add moss and other decorations if you want to your fairy garden.

All you need to do is find a place worthy of your magical DIY fairy garden.
