Have you ever found a ladybug and held it up in the air for good luck until it flew away? We won’t wait for paper ladybugs to fly away, but instead learn how these beautiful creatures evolve from laying eggs to becoming adult beetles.

There are 4 stages in the life cycle of a ladybug, so your kids will have fun coloring 2 pages of this agamograph. In the first stage, an adult ladybug lays yellow eggs on leaves. The next stage is the larval stage. On the next two pages, kids will color a pupa and an adult ladybug.

Children need to color alternate images on each page to create an agamograph. If you have ever made an agamograph before, you will know the beauty of this fun craft – after coloring and folding the agamograph, you can see two different images from two different angles.

You can also print out “version 2” and color the entire image first, cut out the pieces, then glue them together in alternating order.

Are you ready to make your own ladybug life cycle agamograph? Let’s get crafting!

How to make a ladybug life cycle agamograph

What you need:

  • our printable template (you’ll find it at the end of this guide)
  • heavier printing paper (you can use regular paper, but heavier paper would be a better choice)
  • coloring materials
  • drag
  • scoring tool
  • glue

Follow the step-by-step instructions below

Print out the template (find it at the end of this step-by-step guide).

Use your best marker and color the entire image alternately.

Cut along the outside line of the agamograph.

We need some points along the alternating images of the agamograph. Use a wooden stick with a pointed tip or anything similar to get the effect.

Time to fold! Flip the agamograph over and use the accordion folding technique.

Press firmly on each alternating image.

Repeat all of the above steps with the second page of the ladybug life cycle agamograph. Carefully fold the second agamograph in the opposite direction (not face down), so that it fits snugly against the first page when glued together.

Apply glue all over the white page of the agamograph.

And paste it on the second one.

Your agamograph ladybug life cycle is complete! Let’s see the first stage from a bird’s eye view…

…and rotate a bit to observe the larval stage of the ladybug life cycle.

Turn over to see the pupal stage…

…and tilt it again to see the adult ladybug.
