Leaf Spray Painting Art

One of the most fun art projects you can do with kids in the fall is spray painting. This can also be done any other time of the year, as long as you have leaves (or conifer leaves) available, but it’s better to do it in the fall.

Take a walk with your children and ask them to pick up a bunch of leaves from a variety of different plants. This is also a great opportunity to teach children about different types of plants and how to identify them.

With your leaves ready, this project can be done as soon as possible. You do not need to dry or preserve the leaves. Fresh berries are just as effective as dried ones.

How to Paint Spray Leaf Art

What you need:

  • printable template (optional)
  • leaves or flowers
  • craft paper/art paper
  • spray bottle
  • hand painted
  • double-sided tape (optional)
  • optional: work surface protector (a larger sheet of paper, old tablecloth…)

You can buy spray cans at most dollar stores such as department stores, craft stores, and garden stores. Cosmetics stores are also great because they often carry small plastic spray bottles that are perfect for this project.

Step-by-step instructions

Prepare to paint. You’ll need spray cans – we recommend using one for each type of paint, but you can also just use one and vary the colors (you can start with yellow and add red later to creates orange color…).

Pour a small amount of paint into the bottle. Fill the bottle with water. Shaken. You can add more paint if you are not satisfied with the consistency.

We recommend using cardstock or art paper for this product. Although regular paper will work, it will wrinkle.

Step 1

Place leaves or flowers on paper.

Step 2

You can use double-sided tape to secure them in place.

Step 3

Why have just one leaf if you can have many leaves?

Step 4

This will be a moderate amount of mess, so it’s best to use a surface protector (tablecloth, newspaper, paper).

Step 5

Shake the paint again.

Step 6

Spray the paint mixture onto the paper around the leaves or flowers.

Step 7

You can only use one color, but these projects will shine with more colors.

Step 8

It’s time to spray again.

Step 9

Continue with another color.

Step 10

Spray into empty areas.

Step 11

We also added some green.

Step 12

Let the paint dry a bit.

Step 13

Carefully peel the leaves or flowers off the paper.

Step 14

Step 15

Then you can display your unique leaf spray painting masterpiece for all to see!
