Although peacocks are breathtakingly beautiful, they can also be extremely noisy.

When I was a teenager, my neighbors temporarily housed a pair of peacocks. They gave them a home while their larger aviary on a farm further away was being built. The times when those beautiful birds flew away nearby were the times when I lost the most sleep. Nothing could have prepared me for the noise such a (relatively) small animal would make. But you can get used to them.

Put that aside and get back to crafting. This fun craft idea is great for fine motor skills.

This is a fun craft for preschoolers, but you’ll need to modify it a bit – definitely use wider strips and fewer strips. The legs certainly don’t need to be as detailed if preschoolers are doing the project. We recommend using child-safe scissors to cut the strips for good scissor practice. A trimmer is not a good choice for younger children, even if it’s fixed (like ours).

Most preschoolers should be able to do this project. You can let them use a paper cutter under adult supervision (not in a classroom). Always use your best judgment when doing crafts with kids :).

Older kids can easily do this craft and can even take it a little further by adding more detail to the tail feathers (by decorating them first with markers or adding yellow and blue paper).

Instructions for making peacock paper crafts

Here is a list of materials you will need to make a peacock craft:

  • scissors and/or paper cutter

  • glue

Start by cutting a bunch of green paper.

We used a regular letter size paper (A4) and cut it to width.

The width of the strips is about that of a “finger”.

No need to be exact here, just make them as wide as you want – you can always resize as you go.

If you want, now is the perfect time to draw some feather patterns on the paper strips (we think regular “feather marks” or zendoodle patterns would work great).

Glue the ends of the strips together to form a loop/teardrop shape.

You’ll need a lot, but you can also just have a few, any number that works for you as long as the project is fun.

Young children may get bored or lose focus if there are too many loops to make. Older children can do more loops, the more loops the more beautiful the peacock’s tail will be.

In our opinion, stick glue works best when working with paper because it dries quickly and doesn’t wet the paper.

The process of making the hoops can take a while. But it can be a lot of fun :). You can also glue yellow paper shapes to the hoops to make them look more like peacock feathers.

Now let’s make a peacock!

Take the white background and start gluing the rings to the paper.

Draw a semicircle. We start from the outer edge and draw to the center (we highly recommend watching the video tutorial).

Once you are happy with the shape of the tail it is time to move on to the (fun) feet.

Cut out two feet from yellow cardstock and glue them to the base (in the middle of the circle, slightly below). Younger children may just need to cut out rectangles while older children may want to cut them a little more curvy.

Cut out the peacock body shape from the blue cardboard (forming a figure 8).

Cut a small triangle from yellow cardstock and glue it to the top.

Stick two moving eye patches.

Glue the body to the white paper, press lightly on the tail. You have made yourself a beautiful handmade paper peacock!
