So does anyone here love watermelon? I sure do, especially when it’s hot! We are starting a paper plate fruit “series” and the first item on the menu is this paper plate watermelon craft!
Paper plate crafts are great because they can be made by kids of all ages, and most of us usually have a spare paper plate or two in the house at all times!
Watermelon Paper Plate
There are quite a few different paper plate watermelon recipes out there, but I wanted to go a little further and add a special touch that will hopefully get the kids even more excited about making it!
You will need:
- two sheets of paper
- single hole punch
- red and green (green and dark blue – you can also use a dark blue marker)
- black marker
- ribbon
- comb
Start by painting the underside of the paper plate green (lighter green). Let it dry. Once they are dry, you can continue using a darker blue color or a dark blue marker to draw the details of the watermelon rind. Turn the plates over. Color the outer edge of the paper plate green and the middle red. Let it dry. Once dry, use a black marker to draw the grain.
Use a single hole punch to create two holes on the edge that are close together. Repeat on the remaining paper plate, making sure the spacing and position of the holes is roughly the same as on the first paper plate.
Thread the ribbon through the holes in both panels and tie them together.
This craft project is fun to make and can also be used in pretend play, learning about fruits. When children look at the plate from the outside, they will see the peel, and when they pull the plate out, they will see the inside of the melon!
