Sea animals are a popular theme for crafts during the summer months so you can expect to see more sea creatures soon.

Since we love cool crafts and love doing all sorts of things with paper (especially paper strips), the paper dome octopus craft is the first on the menu this year, all about octopus.

While I think most animals on land, in the air, and in the sea are pretty awesome, octopuses have that cool factor, don’t you think? As far as we know (or maybe by our standards), they’re one of the most intelligent animals out there, so that alone makes them pretty cool. Add to that the ability to squeeze through tiny holes, ink, change color, mimic… It’s pretty cool, people!

Are you ready to capture some of that awesomeness by making your own cute and easy paper octopus crafts? Let’s make one!

How to make simple paper octopus crafts

What you need

  • orange printer paper or construction paper
  • scissors (for paper strips, you can also use a paper cutter)
  • glue

Optional: vibrating eye patches or glasses

We think stickers or googly eyes make THE DIFFERENCE with these crafts, stickers are fun to use (have you ever met a kid who doesn’t like them?) and goggly eyes look super fun when they move.

You can also make this octopus craft idea a little fancier by adding some biodegradable glitter (we love glitter glue and always choose it over regular glitter because it tends to get all over the place).

Start by cutting 8 strips of paper.

We cut it to about a finger width (no need to be too precise here).

What about the length? We cut it to the width of a regular A4/letter sized sheet of paper.

Cut a circle from orange paper.

The diameter of the circle should be about half the length of the strip of paper. Again, it doesn’t have to be exact.

Take all 8 strips of paper and align them.

Fold them in at the ends as shown below.

Glue the first strip of paper to the paper circle as shown below.

Create an arch.

Continue with the next strip of paper.

The easiest way to do this is to glue the second piece perpendicular to the first piece.

Continue with all the other sections until you have a nice dome. The last strip of paper may be a little difficult for younger children.

Cut 8 tentacles out of orange paper.

Glue them underneath the paper arch.

You can stick them around or just point them in one direction like we did.

Stick on eyes or draw your own eyes.

We hope your child enjoys this simple paper octopus craft idea and will create many more paper octopuses of their own.
