If your child already knows some numbers and letters (although this game can also be used to teach ABC), they will love this spelling and counting game that you can easily make at home or just Need to use the free printables I created especially for this game. This activity would be a great addition to the number counting/coloring I did last week (or vice versa).
The setup is pretty easy – you’ll need a piece or two of paper, dice (one is enough, but more is more fun), and foam or magnetic letters. As I mentioned, you only need to download and print 4 pages – technically 8 pages as there is also only an uppercase version – in a font that matches the magnetic alphabet in the classroom but can also Easy to use with other types of letters. If you don’t have any letters, your child can also color the letters.
If you plan to create your own version of this game – by tracing letters on a piece of paper and your words have more than 6 letters, add another dice to the game!
How to play this game:
Put all the letters, those in the word and quite a few additional letters, in one pile. Have your child throw the dice and find the letter that corresponds to that number, then ask them to place it on the outlined letter on the paper. If there are two or more similar letters in a word, you can have them place both letters in the outline in a “turn” or just place them 1 letter at a time.
This is a fun spelling and counting activity to play alone but can also be easily played in a group setting – as a cooperative game where children take turns throwing the dice to complete words together or as a competitive game in which children take turns until one of them finishes the word first.
