Monsters are usually most fun around Halloween but since it’s such a popular theme with kids they can be used year round.

There are lots of ways you can get creative with your kids with this theme. Want to encourage them to write letters? Let them decorate their monster envelopes. Want to get them playing more? Print out mix and match monster blocks.

The paper monster craft tutorial we’re sharing today is perfect for younger kids, as it’s a no-prep activity (perfect for preschoolers or kindergarteners) and doesn’t take long to make. It can incorporate coloring and art – as kids will need to color the monster and if they’re feeling creative, they can design their own background to make this craft even more fancy.

How to Make a Printable Surprise Big Mouth Monster

What you need:

  • our printable template – you will find it at the end of this article
  • coloring supplies – markers, pens, crayons or paints, whatever works best for you
  • paper

Step by step instructions

Print out one of our templates (available in two sizes, depending on which size works best for your craft lesson).

You can print them on regular printer paper or thicker printer paper (cardboard), we recommend the latter.

If your child is coloring with crayons or colored pencils, use regular printer paper. However, if your child is coloring with markers, regular printer paper will wrinkle and the colors will bleed.

So here’s something to keep in mind. Thicker printing paper also makes this art and craft more durable.

Give your child their favorite coloring set and let them color the monster.

There are really no rules when it comes to coloring monsters – kids can use light or dark, warm or cool, any combination they see fit.

After coloring the monsters, why not let them design the background too. Maybe a beautiful living room or some place out of this world (or another monster dimension or an unknown planet).

Once your child is happy with the shape of the monster, it’s time to start folding.

Start by folding along the line of your upper lip. Fold across the width of the paper.

Next, pull the upper lip crease to meet the lower lip line – push the paper down to create another inner fold (it will form a crease on its own).

Fold evenly so that all the folds are nice and sharp and you’re done.

Your monster is ready to have fun!
