The Christmas season is a fun time! We love anything to do with reindeer and Santa, as well as everything else Christmas related.

We made our Santa and reindeer print puppets a while back and they were well received, as well as our Christmas lice catcher – so we’re really excited to add another mobile Christmas project to our collection.

This product is both a coloring page and a printable paper toy. It also invites creativity, so it can be a confidence-building art project – with kids being able to design their own backgrounds. Starry skies, Christmas lights or any other background they can think of.

You can also use them as homemade Christmas cards, simply have the kids write a seasonal greeting inside the reindeer’s mouth. When the reindeer’s mouth opens, the secret message will appear.

How to make a paper toy with a big mouth reindeer

What you need:

  • our printable template – you will find it at the end of this article
  • coloring supplies – markers, pens, crayons or paints
  • Paper – should use thicker printing paper, regular printing paper is fine too

Step by step instructions

Start by printing out our template. If you are preparing an arts and crafts project for your classroom, we recommend choosing the smaller of the two versions. Not only is it more economical because you have two crafts on one sheet of paper, but it also makes the project go faster. The smaller coloring area means kids will finish their drawing sooner.

If coloring with markers or paint, we recommend using thicker printer paper. Regular printer paper is fine if your child is coloring with crayons or colored pencils.

If working with young children (preschool age), we recommend using regular printer paper as it will make folding easier.

Once the design is printed and ready to go, let your kids color in their reindeer. They can keep the colors consistent or let their imagination run wild. Regular reindeer or Rudolph? Let them choose their favorite color.

If you want to incorporate a little art into this simple project, let your kids design their own unique backdrop.

Once the reindeer and background are done, move on to the folding part. Fold along the top lip line, across the entire width of the paper. Make the fold really crisp.

The final step before completing your project is to bring the upper lip fold down to the lower lip line and press the paper down. This will create another fold inside the reindeer’s mouth and complete the project.
