Swirly Paper Rocket Craft for Kids

Aim for the stars with our swirly paper rocket game for kids. If your kids love making all kinds of space crafts then this is the right product for them.

This spaceship is ready to launch into space! What we love most about this project is that you can combine this craft with an art lesson and have kids create the background with galaxy paint first.

Have them use their fingers to make stars, a spray can filled with paint to spray on a galaxy, and Q-tips to add details; The possibilities are as endless as space itself.

How to make spiral paper rocket crafts for kids

What you need:

  • our printable template (optional) or hand-drawn rocket
  • white printing paper
  • Black, blue or purple cardstock as background (other colors are fine)
  • Flame-colored printed paper (orange, red, yellow are all beautiful)
  • drag
  • glue

Step-by-step instructions

If you want to turn this into an art project, have your kids draw the background first. There are many ways you can do this (we have a galaxy butterfly guide you can use as inspiration).

Print out our rocket template – it’s available as a pre-printed color print or in black and white for kids to color in. If printing in black and white, have your child color it first.

Cut the missile.

Place the rocket near a corner (opposite the corner) and trace around the exhaust. This will make the next steps easier.

Ask them to apply glue to the left side of the pencil line.

It’s time to start gluing paper strips – rocket exhaust fire!

We chose bright yellow and orange – five strips in total, but kids can use as many colors as they like!

Start with one of the paper strips on the outside and create a swirl.

Apply glue to the end of the paper strip.

Tape it to the cardstock so it stays in place.

Have your child repeat this step with all the strips.

Next, glue the rocket in place.

Rocket construction is complete!
