Tuxedo Matchbox Craft – Father’s Day Craft for Kids

Whether it’s a special message or a little gift, with this Matchbox Tuxedo craft tutorial you’ll learn how to make the cutest little gift box ever. Since we’re turning this matchbox into a tuxedo, this is definitely a great project to do for Father’s Day.

What will your little matchbox contain? Will it be a special message written or drawn on folded paper? Or will you be giving a small gift? We think candy is fine as well as small toys or accessories.

There are many ways you can decorate a matchbox (and if you don’t have one, you can buy an empty one for crafts) but since Father’s Day is coming up, we decided to decorate our matchbox into a little costume – and oh my gosh, it looks so cute.

Let’s make one (or a dozen).

How to Make a Matchbox Tuxedo Craft

What you need:

• a box of matches (real matchboxes or empty matchboxes like the ones you can buy online)
• black paper
• white paper (or if you want, white paint if using an unbranded store-bought matchbox)
• red paper
• button
• glue
• drag

Step by step instructions

Draw a sketch of the matchbox on white paper. You can sketch around it with a pencil.

Cut out the outlined rectangle.

Stick it in the matchbox.

You can also paint the matchbox white.

Let’s move on to the black paper – you need a long strip of paper that is as wide as the length of the matchbox.

Cut off the black strip.

Apply glue to one end and place the matchbox on the strip of paper (the side without the white paper touching the glue).

Wrap paper around the matchbox to form “edges”.

Look at the part of the paper strip that will cover the larger surface of the matchbox (the part with the white paper) and cut a slit down the middle of the surface of the paper strip that will cover that part (see photo below).

Fold the corners of the paper diagonally (next to the slit) to form a collar shape.

“Peel” the paper strip and apply glue.

Wrap it around the box and cut off the excess paper.

Take two small buttons (or cut paper into small circles – or use a hole punch) and glue them onto the matchbox.

Cut a small bow from red paper and stick it on the matchbox.

If you want to write a message on the box, you will need a strip of white paper (or other type of paper) that is fairly long (we made the strip the entire length of the paper) and slightly thinner than the length of the matchbox.

Accordion Surprise

Use a ruler to quickly form strips of paper.

Cut the paper strip out.

Fold (measure the box size, so that the folds are smaller than the matchbox – so that the paper fits snugly into the tuxedo matchbox).

Apply glue to one of the end folds.

Stick it on the tuxedo matchbox.

Write or draw your message (or use stickers).

And fold it into the matchbox.

Close the matchbox and give it away.
