There’s an old Srabble game that serves its purpose – use the tiles to create a Father’s Day Scrabble Tile Frame. Alternatively, you can buy individual letter tiles as well.
We have lots more Father’s Day craft ideas to share with you after you’ve finished this tutorial.

Scrabble is a widely recognized board game that can be used as a great craft item. It’s a fun way to personalize items and gifts as you take the letter tiles and spell things out with them, and even if you can’t get your hands on the actual game tiles, many craft stores sell the letters in their scrapbook sections and sometimes even in multiple sizes.
I found the wooden ones that come with adhesive on the back, which makes them very easy to use.
This game I used to make this picture frame was found at a thrift store for a few dollars and it dates back to 1946, so it adds a little charm to the craft because of the history it brings, and also because some of the pieces are tarnished or worn, to me that just adds a little something that you can’t fake.
This Father’s Day, you can make this amazing photo frame for your Dad or Grandpa in just an afternoon and they will love it!
If you can think of suitable letters, make them extra special by adding a word or two that is meaningful to them, or maybe a nickname that you call them, if possible. However, you can’t go wrong with Daddy or Father. Whatever you come up with, they’ll love it because you made it up.
This is a great way to get your child to help you create a gift, turn it into a fun project, and do it together.
What you will need:
Start by removing the frame and wiping it clean so there is no dust or wood residue on it. You can immediately test your words to see how they fit in the frame.
Then decide what color paint you want to do. I chose chocolate brown because it’s a masculine tone, and chose a metallic gold for the accents.
I wanted to go for a rustic yet cute style, which is why I chose buttons as the decoration. You can choose your dad’s favorite color or add something related to his hobbies or favorite items.
First, apply the first coat of paint on the back and line the frame with tissue paper to protect the surface you plan to paint.
Now paint the inside of the frame and the outside edges. Depending on the paint color you choose, you may need to add a second coat, so allow a few minutes between coats to dry and about an hour after you’re done painting to let the paint dry completely.
While that coat is soaking, go ahead and pick out your letters and arrange them as a practice exercise, so you can see how they will fit. You want to make sure there is enough space for the photo so be sure to play around with the letters to get the best possible arrangement.
Now go back and apply a second coat to the back and sides of the frame and let it dry completely. This will take about 15-20 minutes so if you plan on adding more tiles or any trim you can do this now.
Once the back frame is dry, flip it over and start the process again on the front. Apply a good coat and check the sides and edges for any areas that need painting. Sometimes when you flip it over, because you’re at a different angle, you can see areas that you didn’t see before. Let this coat soak in, and when it looks like it’s about to dry, apply a second coat.
Once this mixture has soaked in, if you want to add any other paint like I did, this is the time.
The metallic paint I used is a little transparent, so it’s perfect for layering over another paint without being too heavy.
I just took a little bit on my brush and lightly brushed it here and there to look like age spots or wear. I randomly placed it where I wanted so it didn’t look planned, but more natural. Then I let it dry for about an hour.
You can go back and check the paint first if you’re in a hurry, but don’t let the paint get too sticky, so make sure you give it plenty of time.
Now, before you use the super glue, arrange the tiles in the design you want first, as well as any decorations. Then, once you have what you like, start by picking up each tile and adding a drop of super glue, then hold it there for about 30 seconds.
Then repeat until all the tiles and decorations are glued.
I like to start with the box in the middle of a word, then work from there so I don’t have to move them too far in one direction or the other.
After letting the glue dry for a few minutes, go back and see if any of the pieces are wobbly, and if so, add another drop of glue to set it. Now you’re done! Let the glue dry for a few minutes and air it out a bit if possible to help get rid of the paint and glue smell.
Add a favorite photo to make it extra special!
