As temperatures drop, more and more children are having to stay indoors, either because they are too cold or because their clothes are soaked after playing outside.

When “stay at home” time comes and you need something to beat the boredom or a simple project to create a beautiful bulletin board or display for your classroom, this winter hat craft is just what you need!

I created a template for this craft that you can print out, so it’s really minimal prep work.

Print out the template, let your child color it or decorate it with other materials (tissue paper, torn paper…) and to finish it off, decorate the paper winter hat with cotton balls or paper.

Winter crafts

Let your child color the hat; encourage them to color outside the lines as this is fun!

We decided to use crayons because they create really nice texture (and are easy to use).

Some other fun ways kids can color their winter hats are using their fingers, tearing up magazines and gluing the torn pieces onto the hat, using stamps (potatoes or stamps…), watercolors (combined with crayons or salt to explore watercolor techniques), etc.

The best way to do this craft activity is to provide as many “coloring” materials as possible to the child or student.

Coloring winter hats

Once the child has finished coloring the hats, cut them out.

The cutting can be done by you for the child or by the child himself, depending on the age group.

Now comes the fun part! Apply glue to the top and bottom of the hat and glue the pompoms to them.

It will really make this winter hat stand out!
