Bring on the summer! Sunny days, ice cream swimming… And countless other super fun summer activities for kids! Most ideas for things to do with your kids are economical and easy to make.
1. Give your kids a magnifying glass and send them on a bug hunt! Ask them to write an error log as they go. There are many scary reptiles around. To be educational, go to the library and borrow a book or two about errors.
2. They can do the same thing with plants.
3. Create a stone mosaic. This is doubly fun – the first is collecting rocks (if you don’t live in an area with rocks, you can always find them at dollar stores or garden stores). Now you have the stones to form a “picture frame” – like drawing a square with chalk going down the sides. Now, let the kids create their masterpieces using only rocks (you can even color the rocks to make it easier).
4. Go to the beach… In your backyard! You can buy two small swimming pools from the dollar store and fill one with sand and the other with water. Do everything as if you were going to the beach – bring snacks, drinks, beach balls, flip-flops (crossword puzzle for you) and let’s get down to business!
5. Visit a foreign country… from your living room (unless it’s in your budget). If you have a globe, you can spin it and let your child randomly choose a country… Or if you have an atlas, let your child open a random page and choose a country. None – the internet has it all – you can use this random country generator (just set it to 1). Once you’ve identified your country, do a quick search online – print out a picture or two and ask the kids to put pictures of themselves on it (like a photo from a trip). Check if a randomly selected country finds it easy to take traditional recipes and combine them together…
6. Build a playhouse outside! There are so many ways you can do it – cardboard is always a fun and economical option!
7. Create a Water Spot (by Paging Fun Mums)! What a cheap project and so much fun!
8. Buy or even better make a kite! For the less crafty, you can also have a lot of fun with a lightweight plastic bag (the ones you can get when you buy fruit or the ones that see through a garbage bag) and a some string – a DIY kite is as simple as peas!
9. Make a time capsule and bury it. Just make sure you make a clear map of where you buried it in case you want to find it years later. My childhood best friend and I made the time capsule and now, more than 20 years later, I wish I knew where it was.
10. Make sponge bombs and have fun in the water! Joy inside children
11. Start a photo diary! Have your child take a photo of something every day, print the photo and put it in an album with a few notes about it.
12. Crack! It’s not a fun summer without sprinkles – perfect for cooling down on a hot summer day. You can create amazing dishes using pool noodles (also there are lots of fun pool noodle activities perfect for summer)
13. Do an obstacle course in your backyard!
14. Arrange a lemonade stand (classic).
15. Play and explore with ice! Like these ice experiments! Play ideas
16. Go to the library and borrow a book on how to fold a paper airplane (you’ll be surprised at the number of different ways to fold an airplane!). Make a few and have a contest to see which model will fly the farthest (or the highest or do the most laps…).
17. Make your own ice cream. Have the kids plan out everything from names to ingredients (within reason). If you don’t have an ice cream maker, you can make fluffy and delicious ice cream in many ways!
18. Buy a cheap set of clothes for the kids – preferably white, some textile paint or markers and let them make their own clothes (or even a clothesline if you find a bargain ).
19. Learn about the night sky! Look for constellations and mark them on your sky map (there are many online).
20. Build a sand castle! You don’t even have to be at the beach to make them – you can get plenty of sand from garden and hardware stores for just a few cents!
With thousands of crafts, activities, worksheets, coloring pages, and drawing guides to print, you’ll always have the resources you need at hand. Perfect for both parents and teachers!
