Painting rocks has long been one of my favorite art activities.
I grew up near a river so my house always had lots of river rocks.
We used to go rock hunting as kids (regular rock hunting), collecting just the right kind of rocks for the project we had in mind for the day. It could be painting rocks and turning them into art, using them as currency in pretend play, or even making building materials to pave the sidewalks for the miniature city we were building for insects and other nature dwellers. Rocks are so versatile!
I’m glad that rock painting is still something kids enjoy. It’s a really cheap material to use when getting creative, even if you don’t live near a river (arts and crafts stores have them).
Ready to make a buzzing bee? Make one or a dozen.
Laterite stone
What you need:
- River rocks – oval is best but any shape will do
- yellow acrylic paint
- black acrylic paint
- white acrylic paint
- blue acrylic paint
- paint brush
Optional: varnish, pencil with eraser

Paint the rock yellow. Allow the paint to dry completely before continuing.
Depending on the stone and paint, you may need to do more than one coat of yellow. If you have darker stone, a coat of white paint first may also help.
Once the gold paint is completely dry, paint black stripes on the rock.
Let the paint dry.
Draw two white circles for the eyes. We dipped the eraser in white paint to make the circles – easy peasy.
Draw a mouth and black dots for eyes.
Paint on the wings.
Let the paint dry completely and you’re ready to go.
Acrylic paint should be waterproof so you can rest assured. If you don’t use Acrylic paint or just want to add a little shine, you can also apply a coat of clear varnish.
