We are starting a new paper toy series on the site – 3D paper dolls! We have quite a few toys to share with you but since you have to start somewhere, here are our insect paper toys.
These paper toys are incredibly easy to assemble, the kit is perfect for spring, so they are a great project for both kids and adults.

Bug Paper Toys – Printable 3D Paper Dolls
What you need
- printable template (we offer both the butterfly and the bee for free 🙂
- colored pencils if you use the black and white version
- drag
- glue
We recommend printing them on thicker paper. We have worked with regular printer paper and it works just fine.
Start by printing out your template. We’ll show you how to do this with our little paper bee doll. We’re using watercolor pencils because they work really well if you use a blender pen (be sure to watch the video to see the magic).
Of course you can use any coloring material you want, but if you use regular paper make sure the crayons (or whatever pens you use) don’t wet and wrinkle the paper too much.
We start by coloring the body of the bee using black and yellow crayons. If you are using watercolor crayons, you don’t need to color “evenly” because the blender (or a little water) will blend the colors and make them look smooth.

Let’s make a paper cone doll!
Next, we’ll color the wings. You can decide whether you’ll use one set and just color the back, or you’ll color both sets and glue one set to the back of the other. Also, color the antennae.
We are almost ready to make our paper insect toy.
Time to cut! Cut out paper dolls of bee cones, wings and antennae.
Let’s make a cone. Apply glue where it says glue. Glue works best on paper because it doesn’t absorb water and won’t wrinkle the paper.

If you decide to make a paper doll with two sets of wings, you will first need to glue them together. Apply glue to the back of one set of wings and glue them to the other set, you will now have wings that are colored on both sides. As mentioned earlier, you can work with just one set of wings and just color the back.
Now let’s glue the wings to the paper cone insect toy. Take the wings and apply glue to the designated area.
Glue them to the back of your 3D bee paper doll.
Now all that’s left to do is glue the antennae to the head. Now repeat the entire process with the butterfly paper doll and your paper insect toy is complete.
