If your kids love making their own Christmas tree decorations, this easy-to-make colorful paper Christmas tree decoration is just the thing. You can have your child use paper circles or other shapes to make this and it will provide great fine motor skills.
You can also use paper circles from a paper hole punch to make this, ensuring no paper is wasted. That’s the best way to use them.

For larger circles, we recommend using a hole punch (most craft stores have them). If you don’t have it, this craft will still be beautiful even if you use squares or other hand-cut shapes to decorate the stars.
Make this an eco-conscious project. Use a cereal box (or similar) to cut out the base and old pieces of ribbon that most of us have around the house somewhere.
How to make colorful paper stars to decorate the Christmas tree
What you need:
- printable template (optional)
- circular paper punch or paper circle from a hole puncher
- a piece of cardboard
- drag
- pencil
- marker
- glue
- colored paper
Step-by-step instructions
Start by taking a piece of cardboard of your desired size. This will serve as the basis for the star decoration on your Christmas tree.
Draw or have your child draw a star on it.
If you are working with young children, we recommend creating a star outline using a black marker. This will make it easier for them to cut it out.
Cut out or have the kids cut out stars.
To create an ornament ring, have your child glue a red ribbon to the top part of the star.
Prepare a variety of colored paper and punch many paper circles.
These circles will fill out the inside of your star, creating a festive and vibrant look.
Have your child glue each small circle along the inside edge of the star (one slightly over the other so they overlap).
If you’re working with circles from a hole punch, apply a generous amount of glue to the paper star and sprinkle small circles over it. Press down, let the glue set, and repeat.
Glue the colorful circles inside the star until the space inside is filled.
Feel free to create random patterns or designs to make your ornament unique.
You can decorate it on both sides.
Let the glue dry completely before hanging the colorful paper Christmas tree decorations on your Christmas tree.
This fun and festive craft is perfect for adding a personal touch to your holiday decor.
You can create as many as you like using our different star templates.
Merry Christmas!
