Crocodiles are really fun when it comes to crafts – this straw crocodile is definitely one of our favorite creations (you just have to try it).

We love making and sharing all kinds of puppets, paper bag puppets (a preschool favorite) are just the latest (and the collection is sure to grow).

This is super quick to make and you can make it a 100% craft project or you can incorporate art too – the crocodile pattern offers a lot of versatility here, but we’ll get to that later.

Are you ready to make your own puppet? Let’s make one!

How to make a crocodile paper bag puppet using our pattern

What you need:

  • our sample (get it at the end)
  • paper bags (pre-colored or for children to color themselves)
  • colored cardboard or for kids to color
  • drag
  • glue
  • black marker

If you have artistic flair for this project, you can let the kids create their own crocodile skin patterns – using bubble wrap for stamping, fingers…

Step by step instructions

Print the template and cut out all the parts.

If working with a paper bag and “blank” paper, paint on it and let the paint dry.

Glue construction paper to paper bag (flap side up). Trim off excess paper if necessary.

Draw the patterns on construction paper and cut them out – teeth on white paper, belly on patterned paper (if possible), tail on patterned paper and tongue on red paper. Head, mouth and wavy pattern on green paper.

Cut 2 large circles from white paper for the eyes and 2 smaller circles from black paper.

Make the mouth. First, glue red paper to the crocodile’s mouth. Next, glue a set of teeth.

Glue the black circle onto the white circle for the eyes, then glue the eyes onto the crocodile’s head.

Next, glue the corrugated paper to both sides of the paper bag.

Glue the oval shape to the crocodile body and glue the head to the flap pocket.

Use a black marker to draw details on the belly.

Fold the bottom of the paper bag up (now the top) and tape the top of the bag to the bottom.

Glue the tail.

Use a black marker to draw nostrils on the crocodile’s head.

Your crocodile paper bag puppet is done!
