Dressing up a Türkiye is a fun and creative tradition that many families and schools adopt during the Thanksgiving season. The project was inspired by a book titled Turkish Trouble, which we definitely recommend you read when doing this activity.

This activity involves cutting up a piece of turkey and giving it a strange makeup to “disguise” it as something else. The goal is not only to engage in a fun project, but also to encourage creative writing – this is why we also added writing prompts to this Thanksgiving activity.

This print works best when printed on heavier cardstock/printing stock, but using regular printing paper also works well.

Step-by-step instructions

Print out a piece of paper with the words “I am not a turkey, I am…” on it. This will be used as the background and will show the turkey undisguised.

Have children color in the colors they feel represent the most normal-looking turkey. Kids can use crayons, colored pencils, or markers (markers really make this craft pop).

Alternatively, print the paper with just the turkey on it. This is where we will design the turkey’s Santa costume. Children can color the whole thing or just the parts not hidden by camouflage.

We colored the turkey’s head with skin color and decided to cover the turkey’s tail to look like a pile of snow by drawing blue lines.

Svg%3E

Print out the sheet of paper with Santa’s accessories and let the children color it.

Svg%3E

Trim the outline of the turkey and accessories.

Svg%3E

Apply glue to the accessories and disguise the turkey as Santa Claus. A coat to hide the body.

Svg%3E

A pair of boots to hide turkey feet.

Svg%3E

We also have to hide the beak, Santa’s beard is the thing. Don’t forget the hat!

Now, take the bed sheet with the turkey not dressed as Santa. Fold along the dotted line on that printout.

Svg%3E

Apply glue to the middle of the fold.

Svg%3E

Glue on the disguised turkey.

All done, now the turkey can take off his Santa costume and put it back on immediately.
