DIY Silhouette Christmas Cards

These DIY silhouette Christmas cards might be my favorite DIY card this year.

They are bright and colorful and there are so many ways you can personalize them. They are also a great art project for the classroom, as they can be very open-minded when it comes to being creative.

Handmade cards are the best! They are fun for all ages, kids and kids at heart alike, and everyone loves receiving a unique and thoughtful handmade Christmas card.

This dish is super easy to make and will always look beautiful.

Because it’s so simple, this is a great project to do with toddlers (let them decorate and you do the assembling), preschoolers, kindergarteners, and older kids. As they get older, they can do more of the process on their own.

There are different ways to make the base of the card, I’ll talk about them later, so this one is really perfect for kids to do in the classroom to give as gifts to parents and family.

How to Make a Silhouette Christmas Card

What you need

  • a sheet of bold white paper or white cardstock A4 or letter size – you can also use white cards
  • black paper
  • coloring supplies (we use markers – Tombows are my choice)
  • drag
  • glue

To decorate the base, many materials can be used – watercolors, scrap paper, crayons, finger paint, paint, stamps… You name it! Provide your child with a variety of coloring materials and let them decorate the base however they see fit.

To make the card extra festive, you can also use glitter glue or gems for a shiny accent.

Follow the step-by-step instructions

Fold a sheet of white paper in half. This large sheet of paper is perfect for small children.

For older children, cut the paper in half and fold it in half again – one sheet of paper will make 2 cards. Any other size is perfectly fine.

Color the cards however you like. Be as creative as you can!

I decorated mine “ombre” style, alternating different matching colors with a paintbrush marker. Cover the entire surface (or leave white around the edges).

Place your card on a piece of black paper and trace around the card with a pencil.

Cut out a black rectangle.

Cut a little off, both in width and length.

This will highlight the edges of the base card and add a nice visual effect to the card.

Cut a festive shape out of black paper.

Gently fold in half (without creasing) and cut out a Christmas tree shape. This should be easy for most children, but for younger children you will need to prepare for this step.

Apply glue to the back of the black paper.Svg%3E

Stick it on top of your card.

Another easy shape to make is a Christmas ball. Draw a line around a circular object and a small rectangle on the circle.

Cut the sphere – there is no need to fold this sphere as you will cut the string.
