When I was a teenager, forums were blooming – you just had to be part of an online community because it was cool. There’s usually a lot of useful debate going on, but almost every forum has its own “off topic” section where we play games. One of the games was that each person would write a sentence and the next person would continue that sentence (etc.) and we would end with a funny story. I think this also makes a great writing activity for kids.
Image via Dollar Photo ClubThis activity can be done at home with you and your child, between siblings, the whole family or in the classroom – the more children participate, the funnier it gets! It’s also great for all ages and you can even invite little kids who can’t write yet – just ask them to say “what happens next” and you write it down (I guarantee the story will there are some unusual twists this way! ).
Writing activities for children
You can be the one to start the story – make the first sentence or paragraph a little more specific to make it easier for your child to continue the story. Starting a story with something like “It was a cloudy day…” is simple but can be difficult for some children to continue. Additionally, you can let younger children complete the sentences with what they want and older children write more than just one sentence. You can with something like;
A: “Once there was a rabbit named Pip. He lives in a house near the forest. One day he went for a walk in the woods and there he saw…”
This way, the story is set up and ready to be great.
B: “…a giant panda.”
A: “The rabbit had never seen a panda so he asked the panda…”
B: “…what is your name?”
Answer: “My name is Bobo.” Panda replied. They talked for a while then suddenly…”
B: “…a dinosaur appeared.”

Take it even further
After the story is finished or even while the story is still in the creative process, you can even create illustrations (if possible, trust me, sometimes things can get a little out of their reach ta) and create your own storybook!
