Whether you celebrate Easter for religious reasons or not, I’m sure we can all agree on one thing, decorating Easter eggs is awesome! It’s one of my favorite things to do (I always look forward to it) and I still enjoy doing it as an adult, even thinking about making them for long-term use, as my Easter egg collection grows every year, I’ve thought about switching to wooden eggs for that purpose, among other reasons.
I love decorating them in unique ways and this technique is definitely something different (we made these when I was a kid, but used fabric circles instead of googly eyes).
What you need
How to make them
Rinse eggs if necessary and pat dry. Sprinkle some cornstarch on a plate.
Crack an egg and separate the egg white. Add sugar to the egg white (about two tablespoons) and beat with a fork (or something 🙂) until the sugar dissolves – we have a little sugar glue!
Dip the egg into the sugar paste, making sure to cover it completely. Roll the egg in the cornstarch, this will leave some “bald spots” so make sure you use your hands and sprinkle a little cornstarch on those spots. Set aside to let the paste dry a bit.
Cut a small beak out of orange cardboard (or regular paper), you can cut it into a triangle (for a flat 2D beak) or a rhombus shape. Add a little white glue or a rhombus shape that you will fold in half (for a 3D beak). Add white glue and glue onto the egg. Add two googly eyes.
I also tried making these with diluted white glue (homemade mod podge glue) instead of sugar glue but that didn’t really work.
