Tip: These are also gorgeous when made with crepe paper
Step-by-step instructions
We have prepared a simple template for this but it is not necessary. Print our template or draw two petal shapes on a piece of cardboard (for example, one larger than 2.5 inches/7 cm and one smaller than 2 inches/5 cm).
This will be our guide for creating rose petals from newspaper.
Cut a wider strip of newspaper, it should be wider than the height of the petal. The length doesn’t matter, you can always use more strips.
Fold the paper strips into an accordion.
Each fold should be approximately the same width as the petal pattern.
Once folded, place the template on top.
Traces around the petals.
Cut along the pencil line but make sure not to cut the left or right edges of the petals (like you would with a paper wreath).
Cut along the top and bottom edges only, leaving the edges intact.
Carefully unfold the newspaper to reveal a garland-like strip.
Repeat the process with another petal shape.
To make the paper rose look more realistic, use a pencil (or something else) to curve the top edges of each leopard petal.
This will give your newspaper a more realistic shape.
It’s time to make the trunk. You can use green paper straws or make your own using green paper.
Roll the paper into a flower stem and apply glue to the end.
Glue the stem to the middle of the first leopard petal. Depending on the glue, you’ll have to wait a bit for it to set because you want your first petal to be super secure.
Now take the smaller petal paper strip and apply a small amount of glue to the bottom part of the other petals.
Gently roll each leopard petal onto the stem.
Glue the bottom of the petals to the stem one at a time.
Until the last petal. You can add a little glue here to keep everything in place.
Now take the strip of paper with the larger petals and glue it on in the same way.
Once all the petals have been rolled onto the stem, use glue to seal the end to secure this beautiful leopard rose in place.
These eco-friendly leopard roses are perfect for decorating your home or as a heartfelt gift for Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day.
Well done, crafty crew!
So there you have it – a fun and sustainable crafting adventure for the kids and yourself.
