How to Make Paper Umbrellas

Spring brings rainy days so it’s a great time of year to learn how to make paper umbrellas.

This cute and fairly easy paper craft can be used as a decoration – a mobile made from these will brighten up even the rainiest of days

If you’re looking for a fun spring craft for a rainy day, these umbrellas are a fun project for the whole family. You can make them one color or make them rainbow-colored.

Younger kids can just make an umbrella while older kids can choose a more difficult version and add little raindrops. This version of the umbrella craft is also kid friendly because instead of just using string, we chose pipe cleaners.

Don’t the little raindrops look so sweet?

Are you ready to craft now?

How to make a paper umbrella (we also have a template)

What you need:

  • colored paper
  • 1 light blue cardboard
  • drag
  • glue
  • wool
  • 1 tube cleaning stick
  • 1 toothpick (to apply glue)

Let’s get started!

Step by step instructions

Print out the circles using the provided template – you can get the template at the end of this tutorial (use different colored paper, depending on the color you like).

Cut out circles. For one umbrella, you might want to cut out 9 or 10 circles.

Make a roof

Start by folding a circle in half.

Do the same for all your circles.

Then fold that piece of paper in half.

The final piece should look like a slice of pizza.

Repeat this step with the rest of the circles.

Open the pizza slice and put a little glue in between the corners. You can help yourself with a toothpick or something similar.

Then fold the fabric in half and press with your fingers until the glue dries or use clothespins to hold the pieces together while the glue dries.

Repeat this step with the rest of the circles.

Press gently.

Apply a little glue to one end of the border…

…then stick a slice of pizza on it.

Look at the picture carefully and make sure you apply the glue to the correct side so we can open the umbrella later.

Repeat this step with the remaining slices of cake.

Then press with your finger until the glue hardens.

Apply a little glue to the border of the last pizza slice, …

…then open the umbrella…

…and join the ends together. Hold until the glue dries.

Use your fingers to spread the space between each slice of pizza.

That way we make everyone equal.

Like this.

Take the pipe cleaner and carefully thread it through the hole.

Handle

Then make a hook…

…and cut off the excess.

Your umbrella should look like this.

Raindrops

Print out the raindrop shape from our template – we recommend using light blue cardstock for this.

Cut out the raindrop shape.

Take 9 or 10 raindrops, depending on how many circles you use, apply a little glue to the top of the raindrop and attach a piece of yarn (each yarn is about 5cm long).

Apply a little glue to each slice of pizza and glue each yarn to the umbrella.

Do the same with all the raindrops.

Done!
