Paper bags only scream to become puppets, right? And we think a paper bag monster craft is one of the coolest things you can make, because there’s really no limit to the imagination when it comes to creating a paper bag.

Kids can use all the colors they want and create all the body parts they want. There really are no rules when it comes to monsters so each of your kids will make their own unique puppet.

We are creating a blue monster with big yellow spots and there are many different ways your child can go about creating such a monster.

The long tongue is a nice addition, but it’s completely optional like any other part of the monster.

How to make monster handmade paper bags

What you need:

  • paper bag
  • pencil
  • drag
  • glue
  • construction paper (yellow, red, orange, black and white)
  • hand painted
  • paintbrush

Step-by-step instructions

Prepare a paper bag and turn it over so that the bottom side is facing up.

Flatten it out and get ready for some painting fun!

Step 1

Have children paint the folded part of the bag blue (or any color they like) to create the monster’s head.

Step 2

You may need multiple coats, depending on the type of paint you are using.

Step 3

Next, have them paint the rest of the paper bag to create a colorful monster’s body.

Ask your child to cut out two white circles for the monster’s eyes and glue them on. You can also ask them to use big round eyes to make the paper bag monster puppet more interesting.

Step 4

Cut two smaller circles from black paper to make the pupils or paint/draw them on.

Step 5

We decided that our monster needed a pair of horns, which we created by cutting two pointed triangles out of red paper and gluing them onto the back of the puppet.

Step 6

Cut out a red rectangle for the monster’s mouth (you can also paint the inside of the monster’s mouth red..

Step 7

Slide it under the flap of the paper bag and tape it in place.

Step 8

Next we will add some sharp teeth. To make these, cut out white triangles and glue them to the puppet.

Step 9

Then add smaller ones on each side.

Step 10

Now this monster is grinning!

Step 11

Let’s add tongue. Cut a strip of red paper.

Step 12

Slide it into the monster’s mouth, then glue it together to form a tongue.

Step 13

Make yellow circles for spots and have children glue them to the monster’s body.

Step 14

Ask them to add as much as they want!

Step 15

Your paper bag monster crafting is complete!
