Paper Circle Butterfly Tutorial

Make the cutest and healthiest paper butterflies that look as if they are ready to fly away. In this paper circle butterfly tutorial, we’ll show you how you can create these colorful beauties from simple shapes. So easy!

This is a great craft to do in the classroom with your older students (old enough to use staplers) because you can then staple a group of butterflies, a kaleidoscope of many butterflies, on my spring bulletin board. It’s very colorful and kids will love seeing their butterflies on the wall.

How to make a circular butterfly with paper

What you need:

  • pencil
  • drag
  • glue
  • paper stapler (we recommend using child-friendly staplers)
  • color paper

Step-by-step instructions

Start by creating two circles, one slightly smaller than the other. This will color the outside of the wings.

Step 1

Next, you need two circles of different colors, slightly smaller than the first pair.

Step 2

Glue the smaller one inside the larger one. Let the glue dry.

Step 3

After the glue dries, fold the paper circle in half. Fold the half circle in half (you will get a quarter circle).

Step 4

Repeat the process with the other paper circle.

Step 5

Open the last fold (to get back the half circle) on both circles.

Place the half circles on top of each other, aligning them in the center and top of the rounded end.

Step 6

Staple together (at the fold and at the rounded end).

Spread the wings with your fingers. Poke and push!

Step 7

This takes a little patience.

Step 8

But with just a little poking and prodding, the wings will open beautifully. And when your kids do this for the first time, they won’t have any problems with the other paper circle butterflies they make.

Step 9

The only thing left is to make a beard. Cut a thin strip of paper.

Step 10

Fold it in half.

Step 11

Roll the ends of the strip for a more realistic look of the beard.

Step 12

Glue the antennae to the center of the top wing to complete your circular paper butterfly craft!

Step 13

Let your child’s creativity soar by creating as many colorful butterflies as they want!
