How to make Chinese dragon-shaped handmade paper plates

What you need:

  • pencil
  • drag
  • glue
  • two sheets of paper
  • paint (red and yellow)
  • paint brush
  • White paper
  • colored paper (we used red, orange and yellow)
  • tissue paper (optional) – we used red, orange and yellow
  • black marker

Step-by-step instructions

Head

Apply glue around the edge of a paper plate.

It is necessary to glue only around the edges and not in the middle so that the dragon can be used as a hand puppet.

Step 1

Puppet sleeves

Have your child cut the remaining paper plate in half and then glue the two halves to the edge of the first paper plate.

Step 2

Your child can “freestyle” color the paper plates or can draw a border along the edge of the paper plate as a guide.

Step 3

We recommend painting this part of the paper plate red, but any other color that matches the Chinese dragon will do.

Step 4

Let the paint dry a bit. Once dry, have your child paint the outer edge with yellow or yellow paint.

Step 5

Once the paint dries, flip the sheet over and paint the other side with red paint.

Step 6

Wait for the paint to dry.

Once dry, fold the paper in half (with the side with the painted edge on the outside).

Step 7

Have your child cut a zig-zag line around the paper plate.

Step 8

Tongue

Cut a large piece of red paper in the shape of a tongue.

Have your child apply a little glue on the back part (the red side).

Step 10

Stick the tongue where the paper folds.

Step 11

Eyes

To create the eyes, have your child cut two half-circles from orange paper. Each form must be rounded at one end and straight at the other.

Have them make folds at the bottom (the bottom is where the straight ends are).

Step 12

The dragon needs eyeballs, so have your child cut out two smaller white circles and glue them to the orange eyes.

Step 13

Using a black marker, have your child draw a dot on each eyeball.

Step 14

The eyes are ready to be glued to this Chinese dragon paper soon.

Step 15

Nose

Have your child use a pencil to draw a nose on yellow paper and then cut it into a shape.

Step 16

Draw two nostrils with a black marker.

Step 17

Then stick the nose onto the dragon’s head.

Step 18

Eyes and nose must be straight. It’s going well.

Step 19

Eyelash

Have your child decorate their eyes with different colored strips of paper or tissue paper. We used yellow, red and orange but children can choose colors as they see fit.

Step 20

Have them add some strips of colored paper to the dragon’s tongue, making it look like the dragon is breathing fire.

Step 21

Children can now reach into the slots between the paper plates to operate the dragon’s mouth, allowing them to open and close the dragon’s mouth.
