Paper plate crafts are great for crafting with larger groups of children because they are a very versatile and inexpensive material. A pack or two of paper plates, paint, scissors and glue keeps kids creative and busy.
There are many ways to make a Sun, we’ll show you how to make a super cool Sun (sunglasses do the trick) as well as some other inspirational ideas for your kids.
You can also make a cool sun-shaped paper plate using rainbow crafts, as this is one of the tutorials we have shared before.
How to make Sun Craft paper plates
What you need:
- paper plate
- drag
- adhesive
- pink paper or colored paint
- black marker
- paint (yellow, orange and black)
- paintbrush
Step-by-step instructions
A sun needs a sheet of paper.
Paint the inside circle of the paper plate with bright yellow paint.
Paint the outside circle with orange (or other color) paint.
Let the paint dry.
It’s time to create the rays. Cut triangles out of the outer circle to create the sun rays.
Now, let’s make cool sunglasses!
Draw the outline of the sunglasses and paint it with black paint. You can also let your child use a black marker.
Use a black marker to draw a mouth for their sun – a smile or a funny expression, it’s up to your child to decide!
You can draw on your cheeks (a round sponge brush is perfect for this job) or stick two pink paper circles on a paper plate.
And there you have it – a cool paper plate of sunshine that will brighten up any day!

Another way to create a fun sun is to paint the entire paper plate yellow. Next, have your child paint a sheet of paper (or newspaper) orange and cut small triangles out of it. Ask the children to glue the orange paper triangles onto the paper plate.
If you want to focus on fine motor skills, you can buy a pack of yellow paper plates so your child can skip the drawing part. Have children cut strips of paper (from yellow and orange paper) and glue the strips onto a paper plate.
You can also ask them to just focus on painting – which gives this project a purely artistic approach. Let the children paint the paper plate with yellow paint and create rays of different shades of red or orange.
It is not necessary to limit children to only orange and yellow. This is a perfect project to explore color.
We think it’s a perfect summer craft idea for kids!
