Paper Weaving Christmas Tree Craft

Young children really enjoy making paper crafts, so this paper Christmas tree craft is a great project to do during the holidays or in your classroom.

There are many ways to weave paper, so follow the method your child knows best.

This fun Christmas craft idea is great to do at home or in the classroom. We used a craft stick to complete this craft, but if you are making a wreath out of these sticks (which we think would look amazing) swap the craft sticks for brown paper or leave them out altogether. Hang them on a string and you have a great display.

While Christmas trees are typically green, there are no rules about what color paper your child should use. If you’re making a wreath out of this type, we think it’s best to use a variety of colors.

How to make a paper Christmas tree craft

What you need:

  • woven paper (regular printing paper or craft paper) in two colors
  • glue
  • drag
  • tick
  • craft stick
  • decorative paper, pom poms or other

Step by step instructions

Let’s start by making the woven paper. You will need two sheets of paper in two colors. They can be any color really, we chose two shades of green for our Christmas tree craft.

Start by cutting a piece of paper into strips. Do not cut all the way through.

Take the remaining paper and cut it into strips.

Apply glue along the last strip of one of the sheets of paper.

And glue the remaining part in there (the top part is not cut off).

This will hold the papers in place, making it easier for children to weave.

Fold all the paper strips (light blue) together.

Now start weaving. Take the first strip of paper and weave it through the gaps, weaving over and under the gaps.

All the way.

Take another piece of paper (same size as the paper you want to weave), apply glue all over the paper.

Stick it on the textile paper and wait for the glue to dry.

Draw a triangle to make a Christmas tree.

Cut out the triangles.

Some pieces may fall off, if so, just add a little glue to them and reattach (or leave them as is).

Cut out a star and glue it to the top of the Christmas tree.

Decorate the tree with tassels, scrap paper, sequins, finger paint, or whatever your child wants.

Apply glue to one end of the craft stick and stick it to the back.

If you want to make an ornament to hang on a string, you can substitute brown cardstock for the craft sticks.
