As temperatures rise, all sorts of wonderful (and creepy) insects start to appear. Bees are one of the most important insects on our planet and teaching kids about them and the role they play is really important.

These little shoplifters make a great unit theme for kindergarten, and these printable puppets (or made without a template) would make a great craft activity for that unit. Of course, you can also make them for fun, as they are definitely a fun spring craft for kids to do.

If using our template (you can get the template at the end of the tutorial) – print on thicker printer paper (this will make them more durable and easier to colour with markers). Regular printer paper is fine, but won’t make puppets as durable as thicker printer paper (cardboard) and colouring with markers isn’t something we recommend on regular printer paper as it can wrinkle.

If you are letting your child color with crayons or colored pencils, plain paper is the perfect choice.

Start by coloring the bee shape on the template.

If working with our template, fold along all the dotted lines.

Using regular yellow paper, fold it in three lengthwise.

The last fold overlaps the first fold.

Glue the last fold to the first third.

Fold in half (horizontally). If you use our template, you will see dashed lines indicating the folds.

You need to double the “open” top layers again.

When you fold both of them together, you will have an M shape.

Let’s decorate! Cut out a red tongue/mouth and put it inside your puppet.

Also, cut a few strips of cardboard and glue them onto your bee puppet.

And the eyes! Both the wiggle eye patch and the wiggle eye are effective.

Add wings and stinger.
