Dragons have always fascinated us, no matter where in the world they come from. Such beautiful fire-breathing creatures easily captivate children and make them wish that dragons were real.

The Chinese dragon is both powerful and colorful, certainly one of the most colorful mythical beasts to ever exist. I hope I’ve captured some of that magic in this printable Chinese dragon puppet design.

Whether it’s a celebration at home, a foreign culture lesson in the classroom, or just having fun with this mythical creature, this craft project is great for both small and large settings. This is a great and easy craft project for the classroom or can be a quick way to relieve boredom while at home.

Furthermore, I hope this puppet will encourage your child to play with it after they finish making it, performing puppet shows to entertain their friends, classmates, etc.

How to Make a Printable Chinese Dragon Puppet

What you need:

Watch Video Tutorial

Or follow the step-by-step instructions below

Print out the puppet, preferably on heavy paper (especially if you will be coloring the dragon puppet with markers) or use regular printer paper.

It’s time to color! On your puppet paper, color the middle third of your design. Leave the left and right thirds uncolored as they won’t be visible.

Also, color the “accessories” on the remaining sheet of paper.

Fold along all the dotted lines on the blueprint.

Make sure the folds are sharp. We run a craft stick over the folds to instantly sharpen them.

Fold both the horizontal and vertical dashed lines.

When all the lines are folded, unfold.

Turn the paper over, design side facing the table. Fold the “third” side with the glue word up. Apply glue.

Fold the other side over, cover with the “glue” and press them together to set the glue.

Now fold into an M shape, since the folds are nice and sharp this will be very easy to do.

It’s best to give the glue a little more time to set, so we recommend using clothespins (rather than holding it tight by hand and waiting) to secure the puppet.

Cut out all the accessories. The flaming ears, mustache, and fierce teeth. Fold along the dotted line separating the design, teeth, and ears.

Glue the accessories onto your printable Chinese dragon puppet (don’t worry, the design allows for teeth to be placed inside the mouth and the mouth can open and close beautifully).

Done!
