We’re ready for the festive season! We have a range of exciting Christmas activities planned for kids and these fun little hand puppets are one of the first to hit the shelves.

These printable Christmas puppets will make this Christmas more fun, whether in preschool, kindergarten or higher grades or at home. Not only are they super easy to make (and quick too), but they’re also a lot of fun to play with.te

Perfect for putting on holiday plays in the classroom or using as paper toys for pretend play.

This time I made two sets (both in color and black and white versions), one “regular” set and one with thicker dotted lines for folding, which makes making these puppets easier than before (perfect for preschoolers and kindergarteners).

Are you ready to play with these fun Christmas paper toys? We’re sure you are! Let’s get crafting.

How to Make Our Printable Christmas Paper Puppet

What you need:

  • our printable template (you can download the whole thing on our membership site here or get the free Elf puppet at the end of the tutorial)
  • heavier paper (optimal – as it will make them easier to play with and more durable)
  • coloring supplies if you will be printing our black and white templates
  • drag
  • glue

Let’s do it!

Follow the step-by-step instructions

Print out any or all of our printable Christmas paper puppet templates. One version has bold fold lines added to make it easier for young children to assemble.

We recommend printing on heavier paper (as heavy as your printer can handle). We used 120g paper in this tutorial. Heavier is even better.

Color all the details if you print our black and white template.

Once you have colored, cut out the pieces of the pattern. If you are working on a version with darker lines, cut out all the pieces nicely.

Otherwise, if you are working with the version without the bold lines (the fold lines are marked on the side of the puppet), we recommend cutting the puppet loosely, leaving enough space around it to still see the fold lines, folding the puppet, and then trimming.

Fold along the crease.

To make the folds sharp, we often use a craft stick to glide over the folds.

Fold the ends of the paper strip back…

…and glue them onto paper puppets.

Let the glue dry before you go ahead and play with your printable Christmas puppet.

How fun! I’m sure your kids or class will have fun making these, and even more fun running around with them and their mouths open.

Perfect if you’re putting on a school play, as kids can create all sorts of different little helpers for Santa and all the reindeer to drive the sleigh.
