Sailboat String Art for Kids

It’s time to show off some new string art for the summer months – today we’re showing you how to make simple sailboat string art for kids and beginners.

We use yarn for these simple projects because it is easier to use for younger children, if you are doing this project with older children you can just use a regular string.

Instructions: Lightly sketch a sailboat onto a wooden board with a pencil.

Start by hammering the nails about halfway into the wood. Keep the nails about 1/2″ apart. When you have completed the pattern you have drawn, wash your hands.

Nail

We string the boards in this order: Red, Yellow, White, Blue, and Black. Start stringing the boards by tying a double knot of the red string around a nail. Zigzag the yarn back and forth, skipping each nail. If the yarn comes undone, wrap it around the entire nail head, about five nails at a time. When you are satisfied with the coverage, bring the yarn back to the starting point.

Create a border with the yarn by wrapping the yarn around the outside of your nail and moving to the next nail. Wrap the yarn around the entire tip of your nail and move to the next nail. Repeat until you are back where you started.

When you reach your starting point, cut the yarn and tie a knot with the starting yarn. Cut off the excess. Repeat until you have completed all the colors.

Notice the order we created them: That’s because we didn’t sketch all the shapes. We only sketched the top and sides of the boat, not the part that’s in the water. Same goes for the sail.
