If you’re looking for a fun dog craft to do with your kids, this Surprise Big Mouth Dog printable is definitely a project to add to your to-do list. You can use our template or take a more artistic approach and let your kids draw their own dog (we have a tutorial on how to draw a dog that might be helpful).

Once you understand the principles behind this paper craft, you will be able to design your own crafts in no time.

This project is the perfect paper craft project for kids to get a grasp on the basics of folding – if you want to get more advanced, you can also have kids fold an origami dog face (this is a perfect project for preschoolers and kindergarteners).

How to Make a Big Mouth Surprise Dog Printable

What you need:

  • our printable template (you’ll find it at the end of this folding guide)
  • coloring supplies (crayons, markers, crayons, watercolors – whatever you or your child wants to use)
  • paper

Step by step instructions

Print out our template – choose from two versions – small or large (the small version is suitable for classroom use).

We recommend using a thicker paper (cardboard) to print this big mouth dog print as this will make this craft more durable so kids can play with it for longer.

Once the template is printed, let your child color their dog. There are many different types of materials that can be used. If you are using regular printer paper, we recommend using colored pencils (you can give your child this cute DIY dog pencil case with a paper tube).

Color the dog design and draw a background if you want. You can draw a dog house, grass, or any other background.

Are you happy with your photo? It’s time to fold it, it’s easy.

Start by folding the paper along the top lip line of the design – folding across the width of the paper. Make sure the fold is crisp.

Just one more fold will complete your project – fold the top crease you just made so it meets the line of the lower lip and press the paper down. This will create another fold inside the dog’s mouth.

And you’re done! Your dog’s paper toy is ready to play with. You can make it open and close its mouth as many times as you like. And you can even write a secret message inside your dog’s mouth).
