Independence Day is a great time to make patriotic crafts – whether they’re about the American flag, bald eagles, or Uncle Sam (and there are certainly many more).

How to Make 4th of July Handprint Art – Uncle Sam and the Eagle

What you will need:

  • canvas
  • paint
  • paint brush
  • drag
  • glue
  • Black Marker Pen
  • black and white cardboard

Step by step instructions

Uncle Sam’s Guide

If you are working with younger children, making keepsakes for family members, you will need to hand-paint the children’s hands. Older children can do their own hand-painting, and the Uncle Sam handprint art is geared toward older children because it is more complex.

Have your child color his or her hands as follows – middle 3 fingers red, thumb and little finger skin color, middle and little finger blue and palm white.

Ask them to press their hand firmly down on the cloth or paper – towards the bottom of the paper (three middle fingers together and pinky and thumb apart). This forms the body. Wait for the handprint to dry completely. Prepare for the second handprint.

Paint the palm of your hand with skin color, middle finger blue, index and middle fingers red. Turn the canvas over and press your hand down (on top of the previous handprint).

Let the handprint dry completely.

Finish the hat by painting with a brush or finger paint red and pressing down. Dip your finger in skin color paint and create ears.

Then dip your finger in white paint and draw hair and beard on Uncle Sam.

Let the paint dry completely.

Decorate! Draw a face with a black marker, draw a tie, add an outline if needed, and a few stripes on the shirt.

Your Uncle Sam handprint is complete!

Bald Eagle Guide

Bald Eagle Handprint Art is easier to make and therefore more suitable for younger children. For this eagle handprint, make sure to use a landscape canvas. You can also paint the canvas a light background color (e.g. light gray, light blue) to make the eagle stand out more.

Paint the middle three fingers with white paint.

Press your hand down on the cloth. Let dry.

Continue painting the hands brown and the thumb white.

Press your hand down firmly on the fabric, to one side. Repeat this step with the other hand, pressing down next to the first hand.

Let the handprint dry completely.

For the beak, you can dip your fingertip in yellow paint and press it onto the eagle’s head.

Let the paint dry completely.

Add details with black marker.

Your eagle handprint is complete!
