We love the holiday season, we love all the crafts that come with it, and all the memories that crafting together brings.

These little trees are great for crafts or DIY decorations for your home or classroom. You can stick paper straws in pots of soil, or you can hang the little DIY paper trees on a string to make a holiday wreath.

These are great for younger children as they get to practice their scissors and paper folding skills as there are quite a few accordion folds – great for fine motor skills and folding confidence as they are easy to master. Did we mention they are adorable? They are absolutely adorable!

You can use the craft template as a stencil to draw on colored paper, print on colored paper, or print on white paper and have your kids color it before starting their Christmas crafts!

Ready? Print out the template (you can get it at the end of the tutorial) and start crafting!

Print out our template. We recommend using regular printer paper as this is the best paper to work with for this particular project.

You can print the tree on green paper like we did (we have a separate sheet of just the stars to print on yellow paper for classroom projects). You can also use a white sheet of paper and let your kids color the template however they want!

Once you have your template, cut out all the pieces. If you need to trace them onto colored paper, now is the time. We printed on green printer paper, so we will cut and trace the star onto yellow paper as we go.

Take the tree section and start folding (accordion folding) from one end to the other, the folds should be about half an inch (plus or minus) wide – about 1 cm wide. They can be wider (easier for younger children).

Make the folds crisp. You can help yourself with a craft stick (or anything really) and run it over the folds.

Once all the folds are folded, use a hole punch to punch a hole in the center, punching through all the folds.

Take the paper straw and push it through the hole. The straw may stiffen a little ;).

Slowly and carefully pull the paper (unfolding the folds) along the paper straw (you don’t need to pull the entire length, leave some for the stem).
