It’s time to do some winter crafts with your kids and snowmen are definitely a great theme.
Playing outside in the snow is the best winter activity kids can do, but sadly there are some days when this just isn’t possible. Like blizzards or unexpected winter rains. Sometimes you’re just stuck indoors and need something fun to do.
Crafts to the rescue!
We love making snowmen (just check out this collection of snowman ideas for kids) and we’ve done it in a number of different ways. This activity focuses on folding and can be a great way to get kids interested in origami – as making neat, crisp folds is a must. Plus, it’s a fun project!

How to Make a Snowman with Paper Accordion
What you need:
- our printable template (you can get it at the end of the tutorial)
- plain paper
- drag
- coloring materials
- glue
- printer
- paper straws
- hole punch (single hole punch recommended)

Print out our origami snowman craft template (you can get it at the end of this tutorial).
Printed on regular printer paper.
Color all the parts of the pattern that need to be colored and cut them out.
Take the body of the snowman and start folding it in an accordion shape, from bottom to top (or vice versa).
The folds should be about a finger’s width wide (just enough to leave some room around the hole where you can use a hole punch). No need to be too precise.
Once everything is folded, it’s time to punch holes through all the folds.
Now, depending on the weight of the paper and the number of folds you are making, you may be able to punch a hole through all the layers at once. If not, punch a few times, making sure the hole is always in the same location (punching the new hole through the first hole).
Once all the layers are punched, thread a paper straw through all the holes (it should fit snugly).
Gently unfold the snowman – unfold the accordion until you have a snowman shape.
Stick the ribbon (paper) to the hat…
… glue the hat onto the origami snowman.
Add eyes and buttons (glue and press them into place).
Apply glue all over the towel and stick it where the snowman’s head and body meet.
Apply glue to the carrot and stick it on the snowman’s face.
If you’re feeling extra creative, you can also add some branches to make the snowman’s arms.
