These paper butterflies are really easy to make, and to make them perfect every time, we even have a craft template to share with you. They are great for kids and adults to make and they make great paper decorations – you could even make a mobile with them.

We recommend using a variety of colors, take several different colored scraps of paper or cardboard and create a kaleidoscope of butterflies.

What you need

  • cardboard or scrap paper in various colors and patterns
  • black cardboard
  • drag
  • Craft stick (mini)
  • glue
  • paint brush
  • black marker
  • hot glue or glue dots (depending on the age and skill of the craftsperson)

Crafting Instructions

Start by painting the craft sticks. Bright paint works best, but you can really paint them any color. Set them aside to let the paint dry completely.

Craft stick paint

We made the beards a bit more detailed, you can make them simpler depending on the age of the child.

For adorable whiskers like ours, cut thin strips of black cardboard and punch holes with a hole punch to get small circles.

Make antenna

Glue the paper strips to the back of the craft stick and glue a punched circle on top of each paper strip.

Butterfly glue

Print out eye templates (or use googly eyes or vibrating eye stickers) and glue them onto craft sticks.

Draw a small smile with a black marker. Set the craft stick aside.

Happy Butterfly Face

Print out the circle and rectangle templates and cut them out. Place on colored paper and trace around the templates.

Cut out colorful circles and rectangles.

Prepare documents

Start folding the paper – start on one side and fold (accordion fold – alternate between valley fold and mountain fold). You will need both shapes to make your paper butterfly.

Folds

Glue the top and bottom together. Hold in place to let the glue set (we like to use clothespins to hold everything in place).

Stick together

Once the glue is dry, spread the wings out.

Glue a craft stick (preferably with a glue gun or glue) to the center of the wing.
