What we love most about this craft idea is that it can be made almost entirely with recycled materials. And even if you don’t use recycled materials, especially if this is a Halloween craft you’ll be making in class, it’s still a cheap one. And your little ones will love their mummy.

How to make a mummy with handmade sticks

What you need:

  • craft sticks (store bought jumbo craft sticks or leftover ice cream sticks from all those summer delicacies)
  • black paint
  • paint brush
  • googly eyes or googly eye stickers
  • old bandages (you can use white cloth from an old shirt or just use paper instead)

Step-by-step instructions

Start by painting the craft stick black.

Paint black until the paint dries. In the meantime, you can skip a step and move on to cutting the tape.

Once the paint dries, add a pair of eyes to the top of the craft stick. We love using googly eye patches and kids love them too; they are stickers after all! This is a better alternative to googly eyes.

Cut a strip of tape. Most households will have at least one package of tape that has been previously opened, is past its expiration date, or has been used but is still clean enough to use for crafts. If you don’t have tape, you can use old t-shirts and cut them, use yarn or just use paper strips.

Cut the tape in half to make it thinner.

Tie the ends together if necessary to make it longer (you can always shorten it later).

Older children can tie tape around painted craft sticks without using glue. If you’re working with young children, have them tape the craft sticks.

Now start wrapping the tape around the craft stick. It doesn’t matter how the kids do it, the only thing to remember is to avoid being blindfolded.

Wrap, wrap, wrap.

Once you’re happy with the shape of your stick mummy, tie a knot or tape to keep it all in place.

All has been done! The craft of making an ice cream mummy is complete.
